「YOUNG POST」report- Our students got to try traditional Indian outfits
Date: 30/11/2018
On 25 October, the English Department and Physical Education Department organised a meaningful activity named ‘Indians in our eyes’ with a view to developing F.3 students’ cultural awareness and giving them an opportunity to interact with Indians in English. We are honoured to have the presence of Father Dolphie Sequerira, a Salesian and Mr Sharma who kindly presented the amazing cultural facts driven by external factors such as religions, history and geography. Students also tried wearing the traditional South Asian clothing from India, Pakistan, Nepal and Sri Lanka. One of the highlights is that Father Dolphie taught students and teachers the importance and techniques of mediation and some basic yoga poses. After the light exercise, all of us chatted with each other while tasting the Indian dishes and snacks.
‘It is an eye-opener for our students. They can deepen their insights on cultural differences. Seeing students actively trying on the traditional clothing including well-tailored kurta, traditional sarees and savouring various kinds of Indian cuisines such as curry, spices and desserts have made us acknowledge such session is not only about fashion and spices, but also triggered our thoughts on Indian culture such as its unique history, identity and language,’ said Ms Tse Wing Yan, a F.3 English teacher.
