A Maritime Odyssey: Portugal and Spain History Tour

Taking 19 students from Hong Kong on a 9-day study tour to Portugal and Spain was a valuable experience for all of us. The trip focused on maritime navigation and the history of the Iberian Peninsula.

 

In Portugal, the students particularly liked the colourful canals of Aveiro and the striking cliffs at Cabo da Roca, the westernmost point of mainland Europe. At Lisbon’s Museu da Marinha, they examined real navigation instruments such as astrolabes and models of caravels that played a key role in the Age of Discovery.

 

In Spain, the Alhambra Palace in Granada stood out with its impressive Moorish architecture and gardens. A Flamenco dinner show also gave us a good introduction to traditional Spanish culture and performance.

 

During the nine days, the students gained a clearer understanding of maritime exploration, innovation, and cultural exchange. They became more confident moving around new cities, practised their English through daily reflections, and bonded as a group. It was a short but worthwhile trip that helped them connect classroom history with real places and ideas.
