Cinquain

Five lines
Each one longer
And longer than the next
Describing moments in detail
Then Ends

  • A cinquain is a five line poem.
  • The first line is usually the subject.
  • The second and third lines are often made up of adjectives and verbs describing the subject.
  • The fourth line is usually a phrase commenting on the topic.
  • The fifth line is usually a synonym for the subject given in light of the description.
  • The lines follow the ration 1:2:3:4:1, which can refer to words, syllables, or stress patterns.

Didactic Cinquain

First, choose a subject. The subject is what the poem is about.  In a cinquain, the subject is usually stated in the first line.

Next, choose two adjectives (line two) and three verbs ending in -ing (line three) that describe the subject. Think of a four-word phrase to comment on the subject (line four).

Lastly, think of one word to replace the subject--usually a synonym.

  1. Choose a subject.
  2. Write two adjectives to describe the subject.
  3. Write three verbs with -ing about what it does.
  4. Write a phrase about the subject.
  5. Rename the subject (a synonym).
