中三級英文科活動- Indians in our eyes
On 25 October, the English Department and Physical Education Department jointly organised a meaningful activity named ‘Indians in our eyes’ with a view to developing F.3 students’ cultural awareness and giving them an opportunity to interact with Indians in English. We were honoured to have the presence of Father Dolphie Sequerira, a Salesian and Mr Sharma who kindly presented the amazing cultural facts driven by external factors such as religions, history and geography. Students also tried wearing the traditional South Asian clothing from India, Pakistan, Nepal and Sri Lanka. One of the highlights was that Father Dolphie taught students and teachers the importance and techniques of mediation and some basic yoga poses. After the light exercise, all of us chatted with the guest speakers while tasting the Indian dishes and snacks.
‘It is an eye-opener for our students. They can deepen their insights on cultural differences. Seeing students actively trying on the traditional clothing including well-tailored kurta, traditional sarees and savouring various kinds of Indian cuisines such as curry, spices and desserts have made us acknowledge such session is not only about fashion and spices, but also triggered our thoughts on Indian culture such as its unique history, identity and language,’ said Ms Tse Wing Yan, a F.3 English teacher.
Liu Shi Kai, one of the F.3 participants, said, ‘The workshop was unforgettable and rewarding. I had the precious opportunity to try on Indian clothing in real life and it felt luxurious on me. The lining and design of its clothing are appealing and delicate. I fell in love with the vibrant colours that are radiating from the dresses . I particularly enjoyed savouring the amazing Indian dishes, ranging from curries to kebabs, from fried rice to desserts! Those were mouth-watering! I have learnt a lot from this workshop and no doubt such experience is more than you can bargain for!’
